A team of PCV bilingual facilitators hosted an encounter with a hibakusha for 30 Tokyo University of Foreign Studies affiliated-students studying in Japan, Zambia, and Rwanda.

Hibakusha Soh Horie kindly gave his testimony in English and engaged in a question and answer session with the students. When students asked what young people could do to create peace in the world, Soh-san answered that he hopes youth will not work in industries that contribute to the military industrial complex, but will instead create things that will create universal well being for humanity. When students asked what gave him the courage to tell his story, he said that encouragement from his elementary school teacher and English teacher eventually convinced him to begin speaking to people from around the world.

In the small group discussions that followed, students passionately voiced their desire to be agents for peace in light of current or past violence in their own countries. Some of them felt quite worried and hopeless about the state of the world but were inspired by Soh-san’s resilience and Hiroshima’s recovery.

Thank you TUFS for another fantastic program! And thank you to our facilitators! @moesasaki @makufirippusu @sagepanter @setomayu_uta @hana.travin
