At the request of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, we were honored to host a program in Hiroshima with the Japanese American Leadership Delegation (JALD) visit to Japan.
We were deeply moved to hear that the participants resonated with the concept and philosophy of “Peace Culture,” which PCV values greatly. Many shared their desire to live their everyday lives while cherishing Peace Culture, which was truly heartwarming. After introducing PCV’s activities, we walked through the Peace Park together with our Peace Buddies. It wasn’t just about answering the Buddies’ questions—deeper, more thoughtful discussions emerged within the groups, making for a very enriching experience.
Some comments from the Peace Buddies and participants included:
“While I feel sadness and a sense of injustice about the discrimination our ancestors faced, I was struck by the participants’ thoughtful attitudes and gaze as they considered what they, as Japanese Americans with dual identities, could do for peace.”“In the U.S., the atomic bombing is often taught only as the event that ended the war, and Hiroshima is just a part of history. But as someone with Japanese roots, I had always wanted to learn more about the full picture and background. I’m glad I got to learn so much about Hiroshima.”For us, it was a valuable opportunity to gain a new perspective through the lens of Japanese American identity, and we were truly honored to have spent this time together.
There was also talk of creating future opportunities for young people in Hiroshima and Japan to learn more about the history of Japanese Americans. We hope that this connection will continue to grow.
Thank you so much for visiting Hiroshima.
