Here at PCV, we facilitate encounters and create spaces for people to hone their own visions of a peaceful world. Our educational and experiential programs promote open exploration and personal discovery, creating opportunities for peace culture to emerge from each one of us. The definition and impact of peace culture evolves with each new perspective, each new “peace” added to the puzzle.

The future we want for ourselves, our communities, and our descendants starts with discovering our personal roles, deciding to act, and working with others to refine and manifest our collective vision.

We all have a role to play. We hope you’ll bring us your “peace” of the puzzle.

PEACE CULTURE

As survivor Ichiro Moritaki said after witnessing the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, “Human beings can no longer resolve conflict through contests of destructive power.” In other words, we have to give up war and violence, directed both towards others and the environment. How can we stop killing each other and start solving our shared, urgent, existential global problems? What can we do to end the threat of nuclear weapons? How must we change to keep our planet livable and, eventually, restore it to health? “Peace culture” is an effort to answer all three of these questions.

“Peace” has countless definitions, but my favorite is: peace is social health. Your body is made up of trillions of cells. When all those cells are getting sufficient nutrition, clean water, and sanitation services in an environment that allows them to perform their proper functions, we call that health. Societies are “peaceful” to the extent that all their members have what they need to live happy, healthy lives.

Our current war culture is structured by the competitive effort to make oneself or one’s family, company, country or some other subgroup happy and healthy. This sometimes comes at the expense of the health and happiness of those across the tracks and the Earth as a whole. Peace culture starts with the intention to restore our entire planet and everyone on it (including our plant and animal neighbors) to good health. The goal for a peace-culture society is sustainable universal wellbeing.

To pursue peace within ourselves and within our relationships, we need to get beyond the habitual or conditioned responses we have been taught. We need to get beyond flight or fight. We need to get beyond competition. We need to get beyond dishonesty and superficiality. We need to relate to one another openly, honestly, intimately and intensely in the pursuit of universal wellbeing. In short, building peace culture involves inner and collective transformation.

Here at PCV, we facilitate encounters and create spaces for this transformation to take place, for people to hone their own visions of a peaceful world. The future we want for ourselves, our communities, and our descendants starts with discovering our personal roles, deciding to act, then working with others to refine and manifest our collective vision.

No great hero will create peace for us. We have to do it ourselves, and we all have a role to play. We hope you’ll bring us your “peace” of the puzzle.

広島

HIROSHIMA

Hello. I’m Kenta Sumioka, vice-chair of PCV.

I’m a third-generation atomic bomb survivor. I grew up listening to my grandmother tell about what happened to her in the bombing.

On August 6, 1945, the first atomic bombing in history turned my hometown into scorched earth. By the end of the year, the bomb had taken 140,000 lives. Even today, survivors suffer aftereffects. Overcoming grief, despair, and extreme poverty, the people set about rebuilding their lives; it took ten years for the population to recover to its pre-bomb level. During the process of recovery, determined to prevent a recurrence of such untold devastation anywhere, Hiroshima recreated itself as an international symbol of peace.

Along with the horror and injustice of nuclear weapons, Hiroshima teaches hope for peace and forgiveness.

Growing up in Hiroshima, I was absorbed in thoughts and questions about nature and the meaning of peace. I traveled around the world seeking answers. Those travels taught me that answers to queries about peace come not from others but from searching oneself. In the same way, PCV cannot provide answers about the nature of peace; rather, we provide opportunities to learn about Hiroshima’s history and spirit, leading, we hope, to learning about ourselves.

Many people think peace is some lofty concept that has little to do with them. But is that really true? Don’t we need peace in our hearts, with our friends, with our families?

Wouldn’t it be great if everyone could be happy? I do this work so that people who ask this question can more easily find friends to work and live with. I, my parents, and my grandparents grew up in and love Hiroshima. I want it to play the role the world asks of it. My friends and I are waiting for your visit.
